Our Leading Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Position.

On the surface, this work might appear more like an arduous academic quiz rather than a new popular music project by a musician whose last single was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Split into 4 distinct sections and voiced in 13 languages, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring female mystery, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently via the prism of various female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is shot heavenward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a long list of contributors. The pure ambition alone makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars look quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in escape overly intellectual chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, with complete praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to blend the past and the present, the stakes are much greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more dramatic. What truly raises this fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Much like the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you still want to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly on a stirring piano-led song about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for several minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes down like cartoonish impact. The track then shifts into the wild single driven by racing strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of Lux is that you rarely quite understand—or even want to know—what you will go next."

Nearly every track ends in a totally different place than where it started. One moment examines the fleeting nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in electronic chaos. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work begins out moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

A key achievement on Lux is straddling the line between bold innovation and broad appeal. It is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed primarily in English builds on a refrain that feels to collect more and more infectious melodies as it spins skyward. This feat is echoed on another expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of hidden treasure that requires time to completely mine but doesn't feels like hard work. While some big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the characters at it, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flutter from conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common gossip about hopeless men. It is a contemporary musical from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
