Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
